Health across the life cycle

GPIS is part of a research network that follows mental health and care relationships across the life cycle, from childhood to ageing, connecting the 2019 Rio Grande Birth Cohort with groups in the United Kingdom, Chile and Peru. The network combines longitudinal epidemiology with first-person home observation (wearable cameras) and analysis by artificial intelligence.

Research linked across the life cycle

Three stages of life, three studies connected by the same network and the same methods of observation and analysis.

  1. 01

    Childhood

    2019 Rio Grande Cohort

Pilot and data collection with wearable cameras in mother–child dyads, combining longitudinal epidemiology and first-person observation.

Lead: Christian Loret de Mola · FURG/GPIS

  2. 02

    Adolescence

    SMARTEENS

Smartphone use, emotional regulation and family interactions in adolescents.

Lead: Michael Pereira da Silva · FURG

  3. 03

    Ageing

    Eco SARC

Interactions between older people and caregivers, and between grandparents and grandchildren: a new topic that brings the methods used in childhood to the geriatric context.

Lead in Peru: Fernando Runzer · UCSUR
Mirror study in Brazil: Rodrigo Meucci · FURG

How we collaborate

The network rests on four concrete mechanisms of joint work.

  1. 01

    Training and technology transfer

Microcoding methods, wearable cameras and AI analysis transferred between North and South and among countries of the South.

  2. 02

    Cultural adaptation of instruments

Filming protocols, interaction tasks and scales adapted to the reality of each Latin American country.

  3. 03

Harmonisation and analysis of data across cohorts

Longitudinal data from different cohorts analysed with comparable methods, to answer questions that a single study cannot.

  4. 04

    Training researchers

The network serves as a platform for theses and dissertations in the graduate programmes involved, with mobility for students and researchers.

International partners

What we do with each partner institution.

Manchester Metropolitan University · United Kingdom

Rebecca Pearson

  • North→South technology transfer: an interaction microcoding method and training for the teams in Brazil, Chile and Peru.
  • Co-design of the wearable cameras, with workshops with Brazilian mothers.
  • Video analysis by artificial intelligence.
  • Harmonisation and analysis of longitudinal data with UK cohorts.

Universidad del Desarrollo · Chile

Miguel Cordero Vega

  • Cultural and clinical adaptation of the filming protocols and interaction tasks.
  • Clinical and anthropological support in the pilots.
  • Translating findings into public policy recommendations.
  • Comparison with the Chilean cohort (data harmonisation).

Universidad Científica del Sur · Peru

Fernando Runzer Colmenares

  • Receiving and adapting the observation technology (cameras and AI) for the geriatric context, in the Eco SARC study.
  • South–South training (Brazil and Chile → Peru) and mobility of researchers and students.
  • FURG–UCSUR institutional agreement.

Groups and projects in the network

CHAMPS

A collaboration under construction with Rebecca Pearson and the Manchester Metropolitan University team on the mental health of children, adolescents and families, bringing together longitudinal cohorts from the United Kingdom, Brazil and Chile.

The strands under discussion include doctoral training, mobility of students and researchers between institutions, workshops and courses in longitudinal analysis and mediation, and joint projects and publications. From Brazil, PPGSP/FURG and the 2019 Rio Grande Birth Cohort take part.

Visões do Cuidado

A multilateral project designed to bring the network together around wearable cameras and AI analysis, connecting Brazil, Chile, Peru and the United Kingdom.

CHANGE Research Working Group

A research group based at Universidad Científica del Sur, Peru. Christian Loret de Mola is also affiliated with CHANGE.

Where GPIS is rooted in Brazil and who it works with.

FURGPPGSP

Rio Grande, Brazil

Graduate Program in Public Health

GPIS is a research group at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), linked to PPGSP. Master's students in the programme carry out their research within the group's projects and learn by doing, with real data and open questions.

Pelotas, Brazil

Causale Consultoria

A research consultancy based in Pelotas (RS) that works on study design, data collection and statistical analysis. At GPIS, it is the partner responsible for fieldwork: it plans the logistics and collects the data for our studies.
