How does care run across generations?

Mental health is built over time and within relationships. Visões do Cuidado studies how care practices, intergenerational relationships and social contexts connect to emotional regulation and mental health at different stages of life.

By bringing together studies and researchers from different countries, the network seeks to understand both what repeats across contexts and what depends on the social, cultural and family experiences of each place.

What we want to understand

Mental health across generations

How experiences and mental health connect between caregivers, fathers, mothers, children and other generations over the course of life.

Care practices

How ways of caring, responding and interacting appear in everyday relationships and relate to well-being.

Emotional regulation

How people adjust emotions to one another during interactions, and how these patterns vary across contexts and life stages.

Contexts and the life course

How these relationships take different forms in childhood, adolescence and ageing, in different countries.

A network in four countries

FURG · Brazil Overall coordination of the network and integration of the different research strands.
Manchester Metropolitan University · United Kingdom Methodological partner in the development and transfer of observational and computational methods.
Universidad del Desarrollo · Chile Contributes to the clinical and contextual adaptation of the approaches to the Latin American context.
Universidad Científica del Sur · Peru Extends the network to the study of ageing and of relationships between older people and their caregivers.

Two scales, one question

Trajectories over time

The network brings together data from longitudinal studies to investigate how mental health, family relationships and care evolve over the years and can be compared across contexts.

Everyday interactions

Wearable cameras, first-person videos and other forms of observation make it possible to study interactions up close. Computational methods help turn these recordings into information that can be analysed systematically.

What we want to build

Adapted methods

Developing and validating ways of observing care relationships suited to different Latin American contexts.

Training as a network

Sharing methods and training teams able to integrate epidemiology, observation and computational analysis.

Comparable knowledge

Connecting different studies and life stages to produce evidence that can speak across countries and generations.

Connection with the 2019 Rio Grande Cohort

In Brazil, Visões do Cuidado connects with the 2019 Rio Grande Birth Cohort, which makes it possible to follow mental health, family relationships and development over time.

The proposal plans to extend this connection with a new in-person follow-up and an observational substudy with families, combining the longitudinal history already gathered by the Cohort with new ways of observing everyday interactions.

Opportunities to collaborate

Visões do Cuidado is open to dialogue with researchers and institutions interested in mental health, the life course, care relationships, longitudinal studies and observational methods.
