Mental health across the life course

We study how mental health symptoms appear and change across the life course, and how different contexts relate to these trajectories.

Perinatal · Childhood · Adolescence · Ageing

How we approach this area

Mental health is rarely a fixed state. It can change over time, forming different trajectories of symptoms and well-being. Our work in this area is to describe these trajectories in real populations and to investigate the social, family and individual contexts associated with them.

We work mainly with longitudinal data — following the same people over time — because this helps distinguish one-off changes from persistent patterns. The 2019 Rio Grande Birth Cohort is one of the group's main platforms for this kind of research.

We also want to identify moments and contexts in which prevention, care and support may be especially relevant.
